Auschwitz camp's stolen sign recovered in three pieces

The sign that is hanging at the camp of Auschwitz is one of the most important signs in history. Just recently, the sign was found broken into the three separate pieces, all with one of the words on it, which said "Arbeit Macht Frei". I'm not really sure why anybody would want to steal this sign, when it is so important but at the same time, brings back terrifying memories of the Holocaust. It is either unknown, or just not stated in the article, whether the group of boys were Jewish or not. There were five men who stole the sign through a whole in the fence, and then drove it away with a van. It is mentioned that the police suspect the men are part of a gang because of the sneaky way they got the sign out of the camp without any notice. The Holocaust is a symbol of suffering and death for the Jews, and all of the Jews who had been killed during this long period of time. Luckily, the cops were able to recover the sign and put it back together so the sign is now hanging again. I don't understand why anybody would do such a crime, such an act, when they know all of the different things that this sign means. Horror, fear, tears, and the most suffering any human beings had ever endured. The sign is up again at the Auschwitz camp for visitors from all over the world to see.

  1. It is very interesting that you questioned whether or not the boys were Jewish or not. How would you feel if you found out the boys were Jewish? I am curious to know how you feel about this article. It is hard to understand why anyone would want to steal such a significant piece of history, but unfortunately there are criminals in the world and thankfully the sign was returned and the expected criminals caught and questioned.

  2. Michelle: Your comment to Ati on his response to his selected article was very mature, sensitive and made me proud of how you thought and articulated to him. I am looking forward to seeing how we all do when meeting the survivors on Monday...what an opportunity for learning..
